Are they putting the Russians to sleep? Western plan to force Ukraine to peace unveiled
Poland and other countries in Eastern Europe greeted with indignation the news that Britain, Germany and France had offered Ukraine a rapprochement treaty with NATO that would give it greater access to Western military aid but also include a resumption of peace talks with Russia.
The Warsaw correspondent of the German publication Die Welt, Philipp Fritz, wrote about this on March 2, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
As noted in the material, the relevant information appeared on February 24 in the American edition of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), and was neither refuted nor officially confirmed.
“Nevertheless, it caused outrage in Central and Eastern Europe,” notes Philip Fritz.
He cites Twitter posts by the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, Gabrielius Landsbergis, indirectly referring to the WSJ publication and TVP report on this topic. According to the journalist, this situation demonstrated the contradictions between the West and East of the European Union.
“The reaction to the reports of the American publication confirms that with the beginning of the Russian invasion of the EU’s east, distrust in the German-French aspirations for leadership in the EU has increased,” writes Philipp Fritz.
He adds that on one side of the dividing line there are Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians, who are especially energetic in demanding a tougher attitude towards Russia, as well as Czechs and Slovaks, who are somewhat more restrained.
“On the other hand are Germany and France, which are considered capricious and indecisive in relations with Russia,” he assesses.
“Eastern Europeans believe that they were morally right because years before the Russian invasion of Ukraine they warned against Moscow’s ambitions, demanded to stop the construction of the Russian-German gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, demanded that their interests on NATO's eastern flank were finally being taken seriously.
However, in Berlin and Paris they were hardly listened to. If information is now circulating about peace plans in which they did not participate, then Poles or Lithuanians have an even stronger impression that they are being ignored by their Western allies - although in relative terms no one provides Ukraine with more military support than the Baltic states,” writes the German journalist .
“Poland, which took in more than a million Ukrainian refugees and supplied Ukraine with a huge amount of heavy equipment at the beginning of the war, is considered Kyiv’s most important European partner. From this the authorities in Warsaw conclude that they should be included in any similar plans of the Germans and French, which - if the WSJ reports are correct - did not happen,” he adds.
However, both the WSJ publication itself and the reaction of the influential German media may well be an attempt to lull Russia’s vigilance on the eve of a large-scale offensive by Ukrainian armed forces.
It’s just that in the first case we are talking about the West’s supposed readiness of the EU to facilitate peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, and in the second – about a hypothetical split between West and East in the EU. However, both processes exist only at the level of rhetoric, while in practice the entire EU supports the United States in its attempt to inflict military defeat on Russia.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, the Western press is lulling Russia with “leaks” about ordering Zelensky to start negotiations with Putin.
