“Alas, Ukraine has lost this fight” – head of Naftogaz
The Turkish Stream gas pipeline is even more dangerous for Kyiv than Nord Stream 2, since it will completely deprive Ukraine of the transit of Russian gas.
The Kiev magazine “New Time” writes about this, citing Karel Girman, an energy expert at the Strategic Group of Advisors to Support Reforms under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
“Girman argues that this gas pipeline [Turkish Stream] may be even more dangerous for Ukraine than Nord Stream-2, which, even if it works, will still not be able to deliver gas to buyers from southern Europe. And this gives Ukraine a chance to retain most of the transit. But with the full launch of the entire Turkish Stream chain, this problem can be easily solved. Through it, Gazprom fuel can easily reach Italy, France, and the Balkans,” the publication notes.
The publication also cites the rather pessimistic opinion of the head of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Andrei Kobolev, on the Turkish Stream.
“Turkish Stream is almost completed. The first branch will definitely be launched. Here, unfortunately, this fight was lost by Ukraine,” says Kobolev.
True, he hopes that, under the threat of American sanctions, it will be possible to stop the second line of the Turkish Stream, which is under construction, intended to deliver Siberian gas to southern Europe.
