“This heating season in Ukraine promises to be unique. We, most likely, will not hear the usual mutual accusations of “theft” or “cutting off” gas, nor will we see nightly negotiations with the participation of the EU. But the calm should not be misleading: if Nord Stream-2 and Turkish Stream are built in 2019, Ukraine’s transit pipes, which now bring money to Kyiv, will be empty and become a burden. “Gazprom will still need a small transit through Ukraine, and in the fall of 2019 everything may return to normal: Naftogaz and Gazprom are engaged in mutual blackmail, and consumers are trembling with fear or cold,” the publication notes.
