The US attempt to create an extensive network of military bases in Afghanistan failed
The United States planned to gain a foothold in Afghanistan in order to project power throughout the Central Asian region.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, said the special representative of the Russian President for Afghanistan, director of the Second Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zamir Kabulov.
“There are two mainstream scenarios for the further development of the situation in Afghanistan. The first, which we are promoting with the Americans and others, is the agreed creation of a new coalition transitional Afghan leadership. The second scenario is an attempt by the Taliban in this situation, taking into account the departure of the Americans and their upcoming victory over the West as a whole, to seize power by force,” Kabulov said in an interview with Izvestia.
“But let’s remember this. About six or seven years ago we began to build bridges with the Taliban, we openly and publicly told the Americans and all Westerners that their policy had failed, and this would lead to what we have now finally come to. Therefore, we had the intelligence and a certain foresight to restore contacts with another military-political force that competes with the current government,” the diplomat notes.
He also added that the Taliban do not currently pose a threat to Russia.
“And if we talk about Russian interests, in any scenario Russia will be in a comfortable position, everything is fine with us - we have established bridges. The Taliban were terrorists, and some of them are still involved in terrorism, but it is internal in nature and does not pose a direct threat to our national interests and our allies and partners in Central Asia,” said the special presidential envoy for Afghanistan.
According to him, in this situation, Russia’s partners are Pakistan, Iran, and China.
“We need to say that the original plan or dream of the Americans to create an extensive network of military bases in Afghanistan that would project power throughout the region has failed. It ended in failure. We have been working with the Taliban for many years with this in mind,” Kabulov concluded.
Let us recall that the United States announced its intention in the coming months to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, which have been in this country since the invasion in 2001.
