Today at 11:00 a group of pro-Russian activists numbering about 30 people entered the building of the Alchevsk City Council, later they were joined by a number of more protesters, the portal “0642” reports.
A second flag appeared over the city hall. However, this is not the flag of Russia, but of Alchevsk. The Ukrainian flag was removed. Most of the executive committee workers were sent home after lunch; the management remains at their workplaces.
After a meeting with activists, which took place behind closed doors, Alchevsk mayor Vladimir Kosyuga announced his readiness to hold a referendum in the city.
The mayor spoke in the session hall in front of Alchevsk residents supporting the “Lugansk Republic”.
“I think everyone should understand that the peace of our city will largely depend both on the city authorities and on many of those present here. That's why we discussed the topic that worries you. We are also concerned about it,” said Vladimir Kosyuga, as quoted by Nedelya.net.
He noted that a working group has been created that will develop a memorandum today:
“We came to the conclusion that holding the referendum that you demand, I will say so, is one of the most important tasks. To then get a trump card and say that you, or we, have a trump card in our hands,” said the mayor.
He also emphasized that the city government is ready today “to organize, with your active help, public control over the work of all public utilities, all budgetary institutions and all public utilities.”
A rally of pro-Russian activists is expected at 17:00.
As Navigator reported, yesterday supporters of the referendum occupied the regional state administration, the prosecutor's office, and the appeal court in Lugansk.
