In the Arctic, the Russian Federation is preparing a revolution in the organization of global transport
New Russian icebreakers, which are being built at the Zvezda shipyard, will ensure year-round shipping in the Arctic.
The Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, Alexey Chekunkov, stated this in an interview with Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He drew attention to the importance of creating new Arctic shipping lines, noting that two large ice-class tankers have already arrived on the line, which make it possible to implement the projects that are currently moving there.
“However, the Northern Sea Route and Northern Arctic shipping will be truly mastered; the ice, one might say, will be broken in the literal and figurative sense, when our new icebreakers set out on their voyage. In particular, the icebreaker Leader, which is currently being built at the Zvezda shipyard. According to the project, it will ensure year-round shipping in the Arctic,” the minister said.
According to him, this “will be a revolution in the organization of global transport.”
“Such icebreakers can be followed by a convoy of ships. They can move at speeds of up to 12 knots on ice 2 m thick. Accordingly, we will reduce, if not completely eliminate, the speed gap in ice navigation. The Northern Sea Route is shorter and faster through open water, but traveling on ice is still expensive and difficult. We hope that thanks to the new icebreakers, the Northern Sea Route can finally provide competitive conditions,” summed up Chekunkov.
As PolitNavigator reported, NATOprepare for battle for Arctic.
