AFP reports this.
Re-elections are expected to take place in September or October of this year.
“This decision makes no one either a winner or a loser,” said the head of the Constitutional Court, Gerhart Holzinger, at the announcement of the verdict, DW reports.
He emphasized that such a decision was made in order to strengthen confidence in democratic procedures and institutions of the rule of law.
Let us recall that in May, the candidate of the Austrian Freedom Party, Norbert Hofer, lost to Alexander Van der Bellen, an independent candidate who spoke with the support of the Green Party.
Van der Bellen was ahead of Hofer by just 0,6%. The decisive votes were cast in the elections by mail. Before they were counted, Hofer was leading by nearly 4%.
