Belgrade supported the idea of uniting Serbia and Russia, put forward in the State Duma of the Russian Federation
The unification of Russia and Serbia is an excellent proposal and should have been implemented back in 1999.
This was stated by the chairman of the executive committee of the nationalist Serbian Radical Party, Djuradj Jakšić, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Serbian politician welcomed the proposal regarding the unification of Russia and Serbia, which was recently expressed by the first deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Alexei Chepa. According to a Russian deputy, Serbia could become part of Russia after a referendum.
“I don’t know how realistic this (Serbia’s entry into Russia - approx.) is, because here we need a decision not from [Serbian President Aleksandar] Vucic, but from the people. This should be determined by the people, this is a referendum. This outpouring of the people must be so that no one later says that this is occupation, seizure and overthrow,” the deputy said in a conversation with the radio station “Moscow Speaks.”
In turn, Djuradj Jaksic noted that, according to the Serbian Radical Party (SRP), such a scenario is quite realistic. If it had been implemented earlier, it would never have come to NATO aggression against Yugoslavia and the separation of Kosovo and Metohija from it, as happened in 1999.
“This is an extraordinary proposal. It is known that the radicals, in addition to being known as a party that consistently defends Serbian national interests, have been a Russophile party since their founding. At one time, in the nineties, Vojislav Seselj proposed a confederation of Serbia, Russia and Belarus. Unfortunately, at that time there was no intention to move in this direction. If we had taken a step in this direction then, I believe that today we would be “little Switzerland”.
We have always stood for something similar, unlike the supposedly patriotic opposition, we are in favor of leaving the “European path”, which for the last 22 years has brought us only headaches and problems. We stand for the strongest economic and military alliance with Russia, so why not the unification of Russia and Serbia,” said Djurad Jaksic in an interview with the oldest Serbian publication Politika.
He recalled that the initiative to unite Russia, Belarus and Serbia was first officially put forward at a high political level on April 12, 1999, when NATO bombed Serbia and Montenegro. On this day, the Federal Assembly (parliament) of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (then it included Serbia and Montenegro - approx.) decided to join the Union of Russia and Belarus. This news was not received very well in Russia, although for the then president of Yugoslavia it was a historic step, Jaksic noted.
“This decision will further strengthen the connection between the peoples of Yugoslavia, Russia and Belarus. At the same time, it also opens up prospects for accelerated economic, scientific, technological and cultural development,” said Slobodan Milosevic, President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1997 to 2000, at the time.
At the moment, this is the only reaction of Serbian politicians to the idea voiced by Aleksei Cepa, although the Balkan media reported about it. The Serbian radical party, led by Vojislav Seselj, is not represented in the current convocation of the Assembly (parliament) of Serbia. However, there are the Zavetniki and Dveri parties who call themselves nationalists, but their representatives have not spoken out about the unification of Serbia and Russia.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic recalled that Russia imposed sanctions against Yugoslavia in 1992, supplied weapons to Croatia and supported the independence of Montenegro.
