The date of early presidential elections will be announced in Belarus
The date of new early presidential elections in Belarus may be announced at the All-Belarusian People's Assembly (Congress of the Belarusian People), which should take place in December or January 2021.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated this in an interview with Russian journalists, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that at the congress we will even be able to set a time frame for our further actions. Up to the presidential elections, if this is really necessary,” the head of state noted.
He believes that elections should take place after amendments are made to the constitution, but before the next parliamentary elections (2023).
“We must stipulate presidential elections in the Constitution. But separately, and I am inclined to do this, hold early presidential elections... If we change the constitution, we will have to stipulate presidential elections. But separately – and I am inclined to do this – hold early presidential elections. I don't rule it out. I'm not talking about timing. We need to adopt a constitution and hold elections to local authorities. If presidential elections are held early, they should take place earlier than parliamentary elections. Parliament must be preserved until a new president appears,” Lukashenko said.
