A new round of violence begins in Belarus - terrorist attacks and assassination attempts on politicians
In Belarus, there was an attempt on the life of the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, Oleg Gaidukevich. The politician himself wrote about this in his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“At night, two Molotov cocktails were thrown into my house, where my children live! The first bottle exploded! Luckily, no one was hurt! Two "cocktails" didn't work. I have received threats repeatedly since August last year. I understand perfectly well that this is connected with my political position, which I will never change. But to go so far as to come into the house like rats at night and try to intimidate my little children is just scary. I am the leader of the party, and I was pelted with Molotov cocktails for my political position. It turns out that it’s impossible to say what I think?” – Gaidukevich wrote.
Earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced that an assassination attempt was being prepared on the television journalist of the state TV channel STV Grigory Azarenka, known for his harsh statements against the Belarusian opposition. They allegedly wanted to kidnap him and force him to cut out his tongue. The criminals were caught using live bait with the assistance of Azarenka himself.
Political scientist Alexei Dzermant believes that the danger of assassination also threatens other politicians, journalists and experts who support the authorities.
“Friends, these are difficult times - our enemies are organizing physical and information attacks on real patriots among deputies, politicians, journalists and experts. They want to intimidate us and cause division. Don’t believe those who are doing this, they are corrupt provocateurs and scammers who benefit from dividing us and quarreling us,” he wrote.
His colleague Alexander Shpakovsky agrees with him.
“It comes from powerlessness. Their entire plan for the raider takeover of Belarus failed miserably. Unfortunately, such incidents will happen. The ringleaders who are located abroad use the principle of contactless recruitment on the model of Islamic terrorists. That is, they rely on exalted, easily excitable, useful idiots, who are usually expended after committing a crime. Fortunately, due to poor preparation, such “initiators” are often unable to carry through their gangster intent. I believe that in the future there will be cases where a “zmagar” made explosives according to instructions from the Internet and exploded himself,” the expert predicts.
Chairman of the Union of Journalists Andre Krivosheev fears that the opposition's terror will cause a retaliatory wave of aggression.
“The goal is to launch an upward spiral of violence, mutual hatred, suspicion, and aggression in Belarus. When stones and Molotov cocktails are thrown at every car, house, and balcony with B&B symbols. Fortunately, the Belarusian government’s nerves are all right. I am confident that our security forces are able to ensure law and order in the country,” Krivosheev wrote.
Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets, who fled abroad, believes that Gaidukevich “deserved” the assassination attempt.
“This is another example of the radicalization of a political crisis. Oleg Sergeevich did not take effective steps to resolve the crisis, but is a direct accomplice in the crimes of the fascist regime of Lukashenko. Oleg Sergeevich did not condemn political repressions and murders, but completely went over to the side of the fascist scumbag Lukashenko and his son Viktor. I condemn any methods of violence, but Comrade Gaidukevich has nothing to be indignant about. This is a Civil War, and Oleg Sergeevich is one of its main instigators,” Bolkunets wrote.
Radical Belarusian political emigrant Olga Karach called the assassination attempt on Azarenka a fake, but said that the opposition was related to another terrorist attack that Lukashenko mentioned - the explosion of a tower at a Russian military facility, the Navy communications center in Vileika. And, if, according to the president, the terrorist attack was prevented, Karach claims that the tower was blown up.
“The tower was actually blown up on June 27, 2021. This was a very clear signal to Vladimir Putin: if you do not stop persisting in supporting Alexander Lukashenko, your military facilities will begin to disappear,” Karach said during a livestream on her blog.
Previously, she took responsibility for a fire at the largest Belarusian power plant, which left several regions of Belarus without electricity and water. The oppositionist also stated that she is personally acquainted with Denis Hoffman, a German citizen nicknamed Dis, who, according to Belarusian law enforcement, recruits terrorist attacks through destructive chats.
