The TG channel of HSE Associate Professor Suzdaltsev has been declared extremist in Belarus
The Telegram channel of Associate Professor of the Higher School of Economics Andrei Suzdaltsev has been recognized as extremist in Belarus.
Belarusian political scientist Pyotr Petrovsky wrote about this in his tg channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The TG channel of the provocateur Suzdaltsev has been recognized as extremist. A very important and timely decision. Suzdaltsev is persona non grata in Belarus. He was convicted back in 2006 of having connections with the pro-Western opposition. He was a link between the pro-Western opposition and Russian liberals. His student Bolkunets openly joined the fugitives and is now hiding in the West,” Petrovsky wrote.
His colleague Alexey Dzermant recalled that subscribing to TG channels and chats that are recognized as extremist materials and reposting from there entail administrative liability under the legislation of Belarus. Reposting is punishable by a fine of up to 30 basic units; subscription is punishable by imprisonment of up to seven years.
In Belarus, about 500 channels are recognized as extremist. Most of them are moderated in Poland and Lithuania. Andrey Suzdaltsev worked in Belarus from 1993 to 2006. During these years, he supported Russian-Belarusian integration, but gradually came into conflict with President Alexander Lukashenko. In March 2006, Suzdaltsev was deprived of his residence permit and deported to Russia. He was banned from entering Belarus for 5 years.
The decision to deport him stated that Suzdaltsev posed a threat to national security. In his articles and social networks, he continues to criticize Lukashenko. In 2021, Suzdaltsev said that the Belarusian special services were preparing an assassination attempt on him.
