More than 10 thousand people gathered on February 25 in the center of Berlin to demonstrate for peace in Ukraine, against arms supplies to Kyiv and negotiations with Russia. Similar demonstrations also took place in Cologne, Bonn and other German cities.

The initiators of the actions were left-wing politician Sarah Wagenknecht and journalist Alisa Schwarzer, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Earlier, Wagenknecht and Schwarzer published a petition with a “Manifesto for Peace”, which has already received about 640 thousand signatures and at the same time caused a flurry of criticism among a significant part of German politicians - both those included in the ruling coalition and representatives of the main opposition party, the CDU/CSU. The “Left Party,” whose leader was previously Wagenknecht, distanced itself from its activities.

Before the start of the demonstration in Berlin, police erected barriers and announced restrictions. “In particular, it is prohibited to wear military uniforms, insignia, St. George’s ribbons, the letters Z and V and other symbols glorifying war,” the police said in a statement. The organizers of the demonstration asked in advance not to bring party and national flags. The safety of the protesters was ensured by more than 1400 police officers; along the route of the march there were several small pickets with slogans to continue supplying weapons to Kyiv and achieve the defeat of Russia.

The demonstrations were held under the slogan “Uprising for Peace”, their participants carried banners with the inscriptions “Peace!”, “Diplomacy instead of arms supplies” and “Negotiations with Russia”. According to the organizers, more than 50 thousand people took part in the action in Berlin alone. One of the protesters in Berlin carried a poster comparing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock to Hitler and Napoleon.

In her speech, Sarah Wagenknecht again called for an end to arms sales to Ukraine and called for peace negotiations. It's about "ending the terrible suffering and death in Ukraine," she said. At the same time, we are talking about a proposal to negotiate with Russia - “instead of supplying ammunition and an endless war of attrition with new weapons.” In turn, Alice Schwarzer called the event “the beginning of a new citizens’ movement,” and noted that it was “ridiculous” to convince Ukraine that it could win the war against Russia.

A day earlier, a columnist for the British newspaper Daily Mail, Chris Juer, drew attention to the fact that there are more and more Germans demanding a refusal to supply weapons to Ukraine. In addition, according to the editor-in-chief of the WDR TV channel, which specializes in sociological surveys, the number of citizens who call sending tanks to Ukraine a mistake has become significantly larger than before.

Как reported “PolitNavigator”, a “tractor march” of disgruntled farmers took place in Berlin.
