In Berlin they complain that Ukraine has become a “weight around the neck” of Germany
The published transcript of the conversation between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and American leader Donald Trump, where the head of the Ukrainian state criticized the leaders of the European Union, offended German politicians.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In Germany, this transcript, the way it was published, caused a stir. It came as a very surprise to politicians and the press. I don’t know how to put it mildly, but, of course, the Germans, especially German politicians, believed that they were helping Ukraine so much that there was nowhere else to go. Ukraine really receives much more financial and especially moral assistance, political assistance from a country like Germany, which considers itself the leader of the EU.
Therefore, President Zelensky’s statements that Germany is doing too little, “yes, Mr. Trump, you are right, that the French and Germans here are pursuing the wrong policy towards Ukraine” - this hurt. Even someone here was very offended,” Rahr said.
“In Germany, more and more people are saying: “Well, we need to solve this problem, we need to solve the Ukrainian problem as soon as possible, it shouldn’t hang like a weight around our necks. And the only way to solve it, as the West sees it, is not to fight with Russia. It is impossible to fight with a nuclear power, otherwise we will have a third world war. In the end, there will be nothing left on earth and we will fight only with stones,” the political scientist said.
“Now expectations that the Minsk agreements will be implemented are much higher than a year ago under Poroshenko. Therefore, the West is very disappointed when suddenly Ukraine says that European leaders - Germany, France - are doing nothing. This crosses out all the mediation and other political steps that France and Germany and other countries of the European Union took to stabilize the situation,” Rahr concluded.
