Bulgaria declares expelled Russian diplomat a spy
The Bulgarian Special Prosecutor's Office believes that the first secretary of the Russian Embassy in Sofia could allegedly be involved in espionage in the country, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
About it BGNews reports.
According to the Bulgarian intelligence services, since September 2018, the Russian allegedly carried out intelligence activities and secretly met with Bulgarian citizens, including a high-ranking official with access to classified information from Bulgaria, the EU and NATO. The purpose of the meetings, according to the prosecutor's office, was to obtain information that constitutes a state secret. For this, the diplomat allegedly offered material rewards.
Since the Russian enjoys diplomatic immunity, the prosecutor's office was forced to close the case. Therefore, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to expel him from the country.
