The Bundestag announces the commissioning of SP-2 by the end of the year
Despite the fact that the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is almost ready, a number of political forces in the EU are trying to prevent its completion.
German Member of the European Parliament Gunnar Beck said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is still strong opposition to the project in the European Parliament. This applies not only to Poland and some other countries of Eastern Europe and the Baltics. The self-proclaimed apostles of morality in the form of the Greens of Germany or the liberal parties of France still reject the project,” Beck told Izvestia.
According to him, these politicians, on the one hand, want to cause even greater damage to the Russian economy in these difficult times, and on the other hand, they do not want to strengthen German-Russian cooperation.
At the same time, the Bundestag hopes to put the gas pipeline into operation by the end of 2021. This opinion, in particular, is expressed by the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy Steffen Kotre.
Nord Stream 2 is a vital component of reliable natural gas supplies to Germany and Europe as a whole. Incidents like these highlight the importance of diversifying supplies. We expect that the commissioning of the gas pipeline could happen immediately after completion, in any case before the end of this year,” says Cotre.
At the same time, Beck adds that Nord Stream 2 is a great success of Russian economic diplomacy, but predicts that if the Greens win the parliamentary elections in Germany this fall, the project will continue to have a spoke in its wheels.
