The Bundestag wants to equate Russia to the United States
Germany has always done well when it maintains good relations with Russia, which is also an important security partner.
About this in interview Alexander Gauland, chairman of the Alternative for Germany faction in the Bundestag, told Izvestia, answering the question of what place Russia occupies in German foreign policy.
“Germany has always done well when it has maintained good relations with Russia. There are many examples in the history of our countries when we had a mutual positive influence on each other. It is enough to recall Catherine the Great or the importance of Russian literature and music for the cultural life of Germany. Russia is an important security partner for Germany,” Gauland said.
According to him, Germany should cooperate equally with both the United States and the Russian Federation.
“Unfortunately, Berlin now considers President Vladimir Putin an adversary, not a partner. Our party in no way demonizes the image of the Russian leader. Unfortunately, in the German media, as well as in the West in general, there is now a tendency to immediately blame Moscow for all the ills of this world. Germany should certainly maintain close cooperation with the United States, but it should be similar to cooperation with Russia. This requires a strong foundation, starting with contacts between the youth of the two countries. Therefore, now it is necessary to develop youth exchange between Russia and Germany,” the politician is convinced.
He also explained why the German government supports anti-Russian sanctions.
“Sanctions are senseless and harmful to the economies of our two countries. Many German business associations also talk about this. Unfortunately, Angela Merkel has bowed to the interests of the United States and is ignoring the negative consequences of this policy for the economy of our country and bilateral relations between Russia and Germany. This must end as soon as possible,” concludes Gauland.
