In the center of Tbilisi, the police went to disperse the Saakashists under the flag of Ukraine
The pro-Western opposition rioted in the center of Tbilisi after parliament passed in the first reading a law on foreign agents that threatens cut liberties for parties and organizations that receive funding, primarily from the US and the EU.
The crowd, which, in addition to the Georgian flag, unfurled banners of Ukraine and the EU, tried to break through the fences near parliament, threw stones at the police, and also shouted obscene insults at the Russian president through loudspeakers (Saakashists insist that the new law is “beneficial to Putin”). The security forces had to push the rowdies away from the square in front of parliament using flash-noise grenades, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Let us recall that the Georgian government refused to impose sanctions against Russia and open a “second front” in support of Ukraine, for which they were sharply criticized both from Kyiv and Western embassies.
Georgian political scientist Shota Apkhaidze believes that warnings from the American authorities about the responsibility of official Tbilisi for forceful actions against riot participants indicate that the West “gave the green light to the new Maidan».
“Now it is very important what position the security forces will take. A lot depends on them,” Aphaidze told PolitNavigator.
The expert predicts that the opposition will continue to promote mass actions with the aim of a coup.
