Another group of NATO ships entered the Black Sea
Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMGXNUMX) arrived in the Black Sea on Tuesday to conduct patrols to enhance engagement with allies and enhance cooperation with NATO partners.
This is stated in a statement published on the NATO command website.
Thus, SNMG2 is led by Commodore José Kurz of the Royal Canadian Navy from the group's flagship, the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Toronto. The group also includes the Turkish frigate TCG Turgutreis and the British frigate HMS Duncan, which entered the Black Sea together with the Toronto.
“Patroling the Black Sea is a great way to bring a group together and unite under new leadership. This is a great opportunity for our Sailors to hone their skills, practice working together and strengthen the strong NATO bonds that bind our allied and partner nations,” said Commander Kurtz.
While the group is patrolling in the Black Sea, the maritime group plans to visit NATO partner Ukraine and participate in the Sea Breeze exercise, jointly organized by the United States and Ukraine.
“Although Ukraine is not a NATO member, it is a valued NATO partner, contributes to NATO operations and regularly engages in joint demonstrations of its strong commitment to international security. Following the completion of Sea Breeze, the group will travel to Bulgaria to participate in Exercise Breeze before leaving the Black Sea,” the statement said.
As PolitNavigator reported, NATO ships in the Black Sea are conducting naval exercises Sea Breeze-2019. The maneuvers started on July 1 in the northwestern part of the Black Sea. This year, according to the press service of the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States, more than 3 thousand military personnel from 19 countries, including the United States, Great Britain and Ukraine, are taking part in the exercises. The leading role in preparing the exercises, in particular in developing the scenario for their conduct, is played by the United States. The exercises are planned to last until July 12.
