A strategic blow to Serbia is being delivered in Montenegro - Balkanist
The adoption of the law “on freedom of religion,” which gives the Montenegrin authorities the opportunity to seize objects from the Serbian Orthodox Church, demonstrated the double standards of the West, which does not notice the mass protests of believers.
Ekaterina Entina, associate professor at the National Research University Higher School of Economics and senior fellow at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia about this.
“The protests have been going on for six months now and de facto attract more than half the country’s population every week. At the same time, we do not see any reaction to these events from the world community. This suggests that there are double standards,” says Entina.
According to her, two years ago there were much smaller protests in Macedonia, to which Western countries reacted quite sharply.
“As a result of the adoption of this law on freedom of religion, the conventional unity of Orthodoxy that existed in the region may disappear. It’s bad that one branch of Christianity is splitting up. Similar events took place in Ukraine,” the Balkanist believes.
She adds that the current situation in Montenegro is “a fatal blow to the Serbian nation itself after the Kosovo plot.”
“In the current situation, traditional values and relationships for this region are being violated. We won't see the results of this immediately, but over the course of five, seven, ten years it will be obvious. From the point of view of identity and the internal national core, spirituality, this is a big strategic blow,” sums up Entina.
