In Montenegro, the level of support for joining the European Union has fallen to a record level
A record low level of popular support for the idea of joining the European Union was recorded in Montenegro, which in 2006 separated from Serbia under the pretext of “faster integration into the EU”, and in 2017, against the will of the population, without a referendum, was included in NATO by the pro-Western ruling elite.
The relevant data from a sociological study conducted within the framework of the project “Political Opinions of Society in Montenegro” is published by European Western Balkans.
Now the idea of supporting accession to the EU is supported by 55% of respondents. “This is a historical minimum,” the publication emphasizes.
Ognjen Markovic, an expert at the Center for Democracy and Human Rights, believes that the reason for the change in sentiment is media reports about the crisis in the EU - the UK's exit from the Union, as well as signals that Montenegro is unlikely to be able to gain membership in the European Union in the foreseeable future.
In general, 46% of respondents said that Montenegro, in their opinion, is moving in the wrong direction (only 28,2% of respondents support the country’s current course, the rest found it difficult to answer).
It is interesting that the highest level of trust among the population of Montenegro enjoys the education system and the Serbian Orthodox Church, which, as PolitNavigator reported, persecuted by the pro-Western government.
