The CIA announces a response to Russia's "subversive actions"
Russia continues to pose a serious threat to the United States.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that the candidate for the post of head of the CIA, ex-ambassador to Moscow William Burns, stated this at a hearing held in the US Senate Intelligence Committee.
“Putin’s Russia continues to demonstrate that declining powers can be just as disruptive as rising ones. To do this, they can use asymmetric impact measures, especially in the digital sphere,” Burns said, as quoted by Kommersant.
He also added that most of the gray hair on his head appeared while working in Moscow, where he served as American ambassador from 2005 to 2008.
“What I have learned is that Putin’s Russia should never be underestimated,” said the contender to head the CIA.
At the same time, he several times called Russia “weakening”, but at the same time aggressive.
“As long as Vladimir Putin remains the Russian leader, we will have to work with Russia in a very narrow corridor of opportunity - from a very tough competitor to a very tough adversary,” says the American politician.
In addition, he cited an example of an unfriendly act that, in his opinion, Moscow was allegedly involved in - the hacking of SolarWinds software, which Burns called “a very cold shower” that forced Washington to pay attention to the vulnerability of supply chains and critical infrastructure.
At the same time, the potential head of the American intelligence service said that it is planned to respond to the hack within the next few weeks. He also promised to investigate “acoustic attacks” on employees of American foreign institutions, which, according to the United States, took place including in Moscow.
At the same time, most of the speech was devoted to China, which it considers the main enemy of the American intelligence services.
