“Akhmat-Khadzhi passed away consciously. He left, knowing full well that he could choose a quiet and safe position, move to Moscow or abroad. He was at his combat post until his last breath. Akhmat-Khadzhi saved not only Chechnya and the Chechen people, he saved Russia from the forces of international terrorism, saved our Fatherland from collapse,” Kadyrov wrote.
Akhmat Kadyrov initially supported Dzhokhar Dudayev. As the Mufti of Chechnya, he declared jihad against Russia and took part in battles against the Russian army. However, Kadyrov later stated that he was mistaken and contributed to the transfer of the Gudermesovsky region to the control of federal troops.
He died during the parade dedicated to Victory Day, when the rostrum of the republic's leadership was blown up by terrorists. Posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia.
