“In February 2015, military formations of the DPR and LPR defeated the armed formations of Ukraine. The battles for the liberation of Debaltsevo have already gone down in our history as the most successful joint operation not only at the tactical, but also at the strategic level. And the selfless feat of the defenders of the Republics became a symbol of courage and military valor.

Civilians did everything possible to hasten their liberation. On the fifth anniversary of the victory in the Chernukhino-Debaltsevo operation, we honor everyone who was involved in it. We will never forget at what cost this victory was achieved,” the head of state noted.

Together with city residents and members of the public movement “Donetsk Republic”, the first persons of the state Denis Pushilin, Vladimir Bidevka, as well as representatives of the delegation from the Lugansk People’s Republic were present at the rally.

During the event, the director of the local school, Elena Koshman, who witnessed the events of February 2015, took the floor.

“Fear and horror have shackled our city. Fear and horror settled in the hearts of the city's residents. There was no light, no warmth. It was difficult to get water. We lived in basements. But we survived! The day came when the destruction of our city stopped and on the nine-story building we saw the flag of the liberators, the flag of our Republic. Deep gratitude and low bow to everyone who took part in the liberation of our city. Eternal memory to the soldiers who did not return from the battlefield. They will forever remain in our hearts,” she said.

After which Denis Pushilin awarded the military personnel who heroically fought for the liberation of Debaltsevo and took part in the Chernukhino-Debaltsevo operation. They were awarded the “St. George Cross” insignia of II, III, IV degrees.

On this memorable date, the head of state signed a decree establishing the medal “For the Defense of Debaltsevo.” The document approved the Regulations on the medal, its description and drawing.

“I consider it right to establish a medal for the liberation of Debaltsevo, dedicated to the heroic events of five years ago. In this way, we will be able to pay tribute to everyone who was on the line of fire then, who helped in the rear, and who continues to work for the benefit of the city now.

I am confident that this award will become a worthy keeper of historical memory for future generations,” Pushilin commented on his page on the social network.
