On the occasion of the 93rd birthday of Great Patriotic War veteran Pavel Yakovenko, a ceremonial parade was held in Gorlovka.

Pavel Yakovenko began his combat career on August 30, 1943 in Lisichansk at the age of 16. From December 1944 to March 1945 he served as a gunner in the 1939th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment. In April 1945 he took part in the liberation of Latvia.

In Riga, at the district hospital, Pavel Ivanovich was operated on and a shell fragment was taken out, which the veteran still keeps.

Pavel Yakovenko met the Great Victory near Berlin, but soldier’s life ended for the artilleryman only in 1952. He has awards, including the Order “For Courage” and the Medal “For Courage and Valor.”

To the drumming of young drummers and the brass band of the Veteran House of Culture, the parade march of the Youth Army members of the Military-Patriotic Movement “Young Guard - Yunarmiya” passed along the street near the house where the veteran lives. Pavel Yakovenko himself took part in the parade in his honor, sitting near the entrance.

The head of the Gorlovka city administration, secretary of the local branch of the Donetsk Republic Public Movement, Ivan Prikhodko, warmly thanked the birthday boy for his great feat, love of life and optimism.

“We, all the generations present here, lived in peace for many years, and it was very difficult for us to imagine that there was a war somewhere. We didn’t understand this at all until 2014, but now, more than ever before, it is felt acutely and hits us all.

Now, understanding what you had to go through and how hard it was for you, we must do everything so that you live as long as possible, so that you do not need anything, do everything in our power so that peace comes to our land, like this you did. I wish you the best health and long life. Will live!" – said Ivan Prikhodko.

The birthday boy was presented with a passport of a citizen of the Donetsk People's Republic and an anniversary sign “75 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Pavel Yakovenko thanked for such a wonderful gift, kissed the passport and put it in his breast pocket, after which Ivan Prikhodko read out a congratulatory address from the Head of the DPR Denis Pushilin.

The veteran was also presented with gifts from the Head of the DPR Denis Pushilin, the Public Movement "Donetsk Republic", the head of the administration of the city of Gorlovka Ivan Prikhodko, the People's Militia of the DPR, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of the DPR, the People's Council of the DPR, the Government of the DPR and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Tourism of the DPR and from the Gorlovka City Council of Veterans.
