In Donbass there is a battle for the preservation of the Russian people - Vasiliev
At the moment, a local Patriotic War is going on in Donbass for the right of self-determination of the Russian nation that lives in this region.
Historian Alexander Vasiliev stated this on the Internet channel “Ukraina.ru”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“In Russian culture there is such a concept as “Patriotic War” - this is a war so that not just the country is preserved, but the people are preserved, so that the Russian people and their identity are preserved. There is a local-scale conflict in Donbass that is of this nature.
Today we are talking about the fact that the DPR and LPR are Russian national states; this is simply a somewhat belated formalization in the language of legal terms, a de facto state. It is absolutely clear that there is a single language, culture, modern urban culture, all these features that fall under the classical definition of a nation. There is also political subjectivity, what makes an ethnic group a nation,” he said.
The historian also noted that in Donbass the state-forming nation is Russian, which has the full right to self-determination.
“When in a dispute with the Ukrainian side, even in correspondence polemics, the right to irredenta, the right of Crimea, Donbass and all of Novorossiya to self-determination are spoken of, Ukrainians often say: “But, after all, we are talking about the right of nations to self-determination, and what is that?” nation? There are no Donetsk and Crimean nations. This means that your appeal to the right of nations to self-determination is insignificant.”
This is what Ukrainians say, and at the same time they fall into a huge blind spot, they do not see the reality - this is the self-determination of the Russian people.
The Russian people have the right to self-determination, being divided into several states. Previously, in Ukraine, Russians were de facto the state-forming people, but de jure such status was not assigned to them. Today in Donbass the de jure status of the Russian people is exactly the same as in the Russian Federation according to the Constitution, this means a Russian national state,” Vasiliev concluded.
