“I asked my commanders to bring personnel to the square for awards, for the first time in recent months of heavy fighting,” said DPR Security Council Secretary Alexander Khodakovsky, speaking in the central square of Donetsk, where a solemn ceremony of awarding medals to fighters of the Vostok brigade took place.

Today, almost the entire Lenin Square was filled, thousands of residents of Donetsk came with one goal - to congratulate their heroes on Defender of the Fatherland Day. But at the beginning of the event, all those present - both Donetsk residents and Vostok fighters - honored the memory of the victims with a minute of silence.

“Here are those whom we almost never see, but on whose shoulders we stand and have the opportunity to live,” Khodakovsky addressed those present. –  And I want to appeal to the fighters with one request - never feel joy when you use your martial art and kill the enemy. Perceive war as a grave and inevitable evil, as a job that you do not like, but which must be done, and if you don’t do this work, then no one will do it. Grieve, regret because they came to our land not as dear guests, but as uninvited ones. And as Alexander Nevsky said: “Whoever comes to us with a sword will die by the sword!”

We didn’t invite them here, and we didn’t want to kill them, and in vain the mothers of the dead Ukrainian soldiers blame us for this. But at the same time, we will never allow ourselves the joy of shooting and killing someone. We should feel joy that we are alive and that our comrades are still alive. The joy is that we are returning our land back, and we will continue to do so. And I think that our war is not over yet because we still have to build a peaceful life. And who else but you should do this, because you once took responsibility, and I am sure that you will not leave this path,” said Alexander Khodakovsky.

And immediately after his address, the ceremony of awarding the fighters of the Vostok brigade began. Relatives of the fallen soldiers, and those who are now on duty, were awarded medals “For Military Valor”, “For Service in Intelligence” and “For Service in Special Forces”.

The entire ceremony took place to the applause of those gathered, and one could often hear shouts of “Well done!” coming from the square. and thanks!". People thanked the soldiers for their military valor, congratulated them on the holiday, and wished for one thing - a speedy peace.
