The crowd broke the windows at the entrance to the administrative building and tried to break into the session of the regional council. People were stopped by the organizers of the rally themselves. Leader Pavel Gubarev entered the building.
He called on deputies to vote for recognition of the legitimate government in Crimea and Sevastopol, to resign all officials recently appointed from Kyiv, and to stop making transfers to the central budget of Ukraine.
“Another of our demands is a referendum on the status of the territory of the Donetsk region,” Gubarev said.
However, after the break, the deputies refused to comply with the demands of the protesters. Instead, they voted to appoint “regional” Andrei Shishatsky as the new head of the regional council.
Gubarev responded by saying that the regional council had betrayed the people.
“You are crazy, you are plunging the region into war... Today I am holding back thousands of armed people who want to fight. The escalation of the conflict is entirely your fault. You put a man from the oligarchy on the throne. The people will not accept him. I no longer have the strength to restrain these angry people,” the Ostrov publication quotes the leader of the demonstrators.
After this, the “regionals” voted to close the meeting.
