For many residents of the Donetsk People's Republic, it was this terrible event that became decisive in their decision to take up arms and begin resistance.
“Today we have gathered here to honor the memory of those who died in Odessa a year ago. To honor the memory of people who were not afraid to protest in a country called Ukraine, and, after the brutal massacre of them, not only Odessa, but also the rest of Ukraine realized that such a country no longer exists. Unfortunately, those responsible for the deaths of dozens of our friends are now marching through our cities and villages, putting on swastikas and laughing. But I promise them that sooner or later each of them will be punished and such atrocities will not happen again in any city. I would like to appeal to the residents of Odessa: we, just like you, share the grief for the dead, and we promise that you were, are and will be brothers for us,” said DPR leader Alexander Zakharchenko.
Also speaking at the rally were residents of Odessa - Anti-Maidan activist Alexander Voskoboynikov and deputy of the Odessa City Council Alexander Vasiliev.
Participants of the action expressed words of support to the residents of Odessa, carried flowers and lit candles near photographs from the scene of events.
On Saturday, Donetsk also joined the “Beep” campaign - at exactly 12 noon, motorists paid tribute to the memory of Odessa residents and expressed their silent protest with a drawn-out car horn.
