“It’s no secret that we have military personnel who commit crimes. There are facts of looting and violence. Therefore, the creation of military justice bodies should be one of the top priorities,” said the acting. Prosecutor General of the DPR Eduard Yakubovsky, as quoted by the official government website.

According to Yakubovsky, the system of military courts will be two-tier. The lower level includes military courts, which consider crimes committed by military personnel in positions up to company commander. The top level includes military tribunals, which deal with offenses by battalion commanders and above.

The adoption of a resolution on military courts is required by the difficult political and economic situation in the republic, says First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers Vladimir Antyufeev.

According to DPR Prime Minister Alexander Zakharchenko, this resolution will also serve as a “preventive measure.”

As the DPR press service explained, when developing the Criminal Code, the regulatory framework of the Russian Federation was taken as a basis. The legislative act provides for the death penalty for especially serious crimes.

“When we end the war, we will follow the path of humanizing our criminal legislation,” said DPR Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Karaman, as quoted on the official website.

As Navigator reported, for the first time tough measures to suppress looting began to be used by militias in Slavyansk in the spring.
