The Duma is convinced that the era of Ukrainian blackmail is coming to an end
Any new gas pipeline supplying gas to Europe will bring great economic losses to Ukraine and will make it impossible to blackmail Europe and Russia.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy Pavel Zavalny stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Such statements can only come to the fevered brains of Ukrainian politicians. Whatever happens is a build-up of tension. But in fact, there is a purely commercial interest behind this. They understand perfectly well that with the completion of the construction of the Turkish Stream and Nord Stream 2, the entire volume of gas that is currently transiting through Ukraine, which is 80 billion, can be sent past Ukraine. And Ukraine is losing, no less than $3 billion in revenue that it receives today. Given that the entire volume of Ukraine’s GDP is just over one hundred billion dollars, this is, in fact, three percent of GDP. But besides this, Ukraine is losing influence and the ability to blackmail both Europe and Russia. You know that Europe today is very dependent on gas supplies from Russia; the volume of supplies exceeds 200 billion cubic meters of gas per year,” the parliamentarian noted.
