Hungarian Minister of External Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjártó, who arrived in Moscow for negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, spoke about this in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper.
“Sanctions harm Europe, Russia, and Ukraine, and we hope that the Minsk agreements will be implemented,” said the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. “But there is a consensus in the EU that the condition for changing the sanctions regime remains the implementation of the Minsk agreements. So Hungary will continue to adhere to the decisions taken jointly by the EU countries.”
But at the same time, the publication’s interlocutor pointed out that we should not forget about the losses that the EU suffered from sanctions.
“We must be aware that these sanctions have been a heavy blow to the European economy,” says Szijjártó. – So, Russia was Hungary’s second trading partner in 2013, but has now dropped to 13th or 14th place. We have lost more than half of our exports to Russia: from $3,5 billion it fell to $1,6 billion a year.”
