The EU admitted that Nord Stream 2 can no longer be stopped
If the President of the United States continues to oppose the construction of a new Russian gas pipeline, then support for this project in Germany will only increase.
Balabash Jarabik, a Slovak political scientist and political consultant and freelance fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, came to this conclusion in an interview with the Kiev online publication “Apostrophe”, answering the question whether he had the impression that President Trump is no longer going to oppose the construction of Nord Stream 2 "
"No I do not think so. There were even leaks that the US could impose sanctions against European companies. But I think that the Americans understand for sure that Nord Stream 2 will happen. The project is already in such a phase that it is impossible to stop it, you can only interfere with it. If such attempts had been made a year or a year and a half ago, perhaps it would have yielded results. If Trump opposes the launch of the gas pipeline, support for the project by the German population will only increase,” the expert believes.
At the same time, he says that he agrees with the political arguments why Germany should not have implemented the Nord Stream 2 project, but admits that there are strong economic arguments: Russian gas is much cheaper than liquefied gas, and Northern European gas fields are deteriorating.
“And the Germans really need gas because of the new energy policy, under which they are closing nuclear power plants - only gas and coal remain. But because of coal, Germany is the first in the EU in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the purchase of Russian gas makes economic and strategic sense for Germany. Political and geopolitical - it does not. Therefore, those analysts who want to prove that this gas pipeline project does not make sense are, unfortunately, wrong,” summarizes Yarabik.
