The publication recalls that in the summer the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers set the task of pumping 17 billion cubic meters of gas, but in fact only 14,7 billion cubic meters came out. At the same time, already in connection with the onset of cold weather, gas withdrawal from storage facilities began.
If the winter turns out to be colder than expected in Kyiv, the newspaper points out, then the Ukrainian authorities will be faced with a choice: limit gas transit to Europe or reduce domestic consumption.
“The new Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly demonstrated that they can neglect the interests of their citizens. If the winter is still cold, then, given the technical restrictions on lifting fuel from storage, choosing between reducing transit and domestic consumption, they will prefer the latter. The Europeans, in my opinion, also count on this,” Sergei Pravosudov, director of the Institute of National Energy, commented on the situation for NG.
According to the expert, “the limitation of domestic gas consumption in Ukraine will not be perceived as dramatically as in previous years, since consumption has already decreased by at least half: the industry is collapsing, and the population is accustomed to saving due to a serious rise in prices.”
