The EU has linked Ukraine to the best way to counter Russia
The best way to “resist Russian expansionism” is to “help Ukraine,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the contender for the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, speaking at a hearing of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, the press service of the European Parliament reports.
“I think the best way to counter Russian expansionism, if you can call it that, or the Russian threat, is to help Ukraine, strengthen Ukraine, strengthen their resistance, their capacity, their reforms and become a full-fledged democratic and prosperous country,” Borrell said .
According to him, sanctions against Russia will help this, but they should not be EU policy, but only its instrument.
“We have to be tough with Russia, but at the same time understand that this is who we have to deal with. Not everything can be solved by sanctions on top of sanctions. We must respect the sanctions, but at the same time we have diplomatic tools and principles that open the door to establish the necessary dialogue in some areas,” he added.
On August 6, the European Council “formally” appointed Josep Borrell, the Spanish Foreign Minister, as the new High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Now Borrell's candidacy must be supported by the European Parliament.
