EU Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli stated this in an interview with the Kyiv magazine Focus, answering the question of how long European unity will be maintained on the issue of extending sanctions against the Russian Federation.
He noted that while there is a consensus on this issue, there are no serious debates and all 28 EU member countries quite quickly agree to extend sanctions every six months.
“At the same time, in some countries there are politicians who insist that sanctions against the Russian Federation cannot last for very long. So, I think there will still be debates on this issue within the EU. Some politicians also say that we must forget about Crimea, we must gradually lift sanctions, etc., but the situation is clear: sanctions will be extended until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented and the illegal annexation of Crimea stops,” Mingarelli said.
