The European Commission ignored Poroshenko’s call to abandon the construction of Nord Stream 2
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, speaking to reporters in Kyiv today, desperately criticized the latest “cynical actions” of the Russian Gazprom, which raised the question of breaking all contracts with Ukraine.
Gazprom has finally lost its image as a reliable partner in the energy sector for the EU and Ukraine. The Kremlin has clearly indicated its intention to use the issue of energy supplies in the future as a method of geopolitical struggle, deliberately neglecting both contractual obligations and justice.
“Ukraine appealed to the European Commission to abandon the intention to build Nord Stream 2 as a project that threatens the energy security of Ukraine and the EU,” Poroshenko said at a joint press conference with Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini.
Mogherini promised support for Poroshenko, but not on the issue of banning the construction of Nord Stream 2.
Gazprom must fulfill its contractual obligations. The European Commission is actively working in this direction, we are ready to resume trilateral negotiations,” Mogherini said.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, Gazprom decided to begin the procedure for terminating the contract with Ukraine after the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration Court, which obliged it to pay for transit services regardless of the actual volumes of gas pumped.
