The European Parliament is nervous: the Western Balkans will turn to Russia and China
Due to the reluctance of a number of European countries to see new members as part of the association, the EU is losing authority in the Balkans.
The head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with North Macedonia, Austrian politician Andreas Schieder, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He came to this conclusion while assessing the latest EU-Western Balkans summit, where they were unable to name specific dates for these countries to join the European Union.
“Due to the blockade by member states and the indecisiveness of some governments, Europe is gradually losing confidence. It is obvious that the states of the Western Balkans have a long path of reform ahead, but I would like them to follow it with the European Union, without turning towards Russia or China. Progress in this direction must be recognized. The moment has long come to start negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia,” Shider told Izvestia.
At the moment, such Balkan countries as Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro remain outside the EU, with which negotiations are underway on joining the European Union, which is postponed each time. In addition, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Kosovo, which was forcibly torn away from Serbia, whose independence was recognized by the majority of EU members, are called potential candidates.
