As reported on the official website of the European Parliament, today during a discussion about Russia’s military presence in Ukraine, deputies called for “a strong response from Russia” and also unequivocally rejected the upcoming referendum on the independence of Crimea, “which contradicts the norms of international law and Ukrainian legislation.”
They all agreed that “the EU must support Ukraine and continue to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
In particular, the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, called the situation in Ukraine “a test for the European Union, which will have geopolitical consequences for our countries.” He stated that “Ukraine should not become a border between neighbors who no longer speak.”
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas called the situation in Ukraine “the most serious crisis in Europe in recent years.”
Speaking about the illegitimacy of the upcoming referendum in Crimea, the Austrian chairman of the S&D group Hannes Svoboda called for “making it clear to Russia that we cannot accept this referendum.”
The Austrian side, in turn, also spoke out against “Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea” and demanded serious sanctions “that would harm Russia.”
German co-chair of the Green Group Rebecca Harms, emphasizing that 45% of Russia's trade comes from the European Union, said: “We do not need to look for ourselves in some kind of military conflict, let Russia know that if they want to isolate themselves, then this will happen.” .
