The project to create a fighter of the future has been launched in Europe
Germany, France and Spain on Monday, June 17, launched the largest defense project in Europe, within the framework of which a fifth-generation fighter (Future Combat Air System, FCAS or SCAF) should be created by 2040, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
Deutsche Welle reports this.
A framework agreement for the production of the system was signed during the Le Bourget Air Show. The ceremony was attended by the three countries' defense ministers Ursula von der Leyen, Florence Parly and Margarita Robles, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.
Unlike the European Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, we are not just talking about individual combat aircraft, but about an entire system that also includes accompanying drone squads, flagship and patrol aircraft, ground stations and satellites. The entire complex of systems must exchange data in real time. The total cost of the project is estimated at up to 50 billion euros.
Germany and France allocated 32,5 million euros each for the development of the concept. As part of this study, by the end of 2020 it is expected to draw up a detailed plan of what will be included in the new system. The project is led by France. The Ministry of Defense in Paris will enter into separate agreements with industry as part of the project.
