Europe welcomed the proposal of Czech President Milos Zeman to officially recognize the Russian status of Crimea if Russia pays Ukraine some compensation for it.

Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky, who is now in Strasbourg, wrote about this on his Facebook page.

“The Ukrainian side can be indignant as much as they want, but Zeman’s proposals do not cause any particular rejection among anyone. Russia was one of the main contributors to the Council of Europe, and in 2017 it did not contribute approximately 2/3 of its usual contribution, and this really worries European officials. Now, by the way, negotiations are underway on the formation of the Council of Europe budget for the next two years,” Shpakovsky wrote.

In his opinion, the option for resolving the Crimean issue proposed by the President of the Czech Republic is very reasonable and takes into account the interests of Ukraine.

“For all the doubts many have about the adequacy of the Ukrainian position, the international community interprets the Crimean situation as an “annexation.” Accordingly, we need a way out and a compromise that will allow Ukraine to save face, the Western allies to get out of the situation, and Russia to legitimize at the international level the decision of the population of Crimea to join the Russian Federation. Therefore, Zeman’s proposal looks sensible, and accordingly, the one-sided diplomatic radicalism demonstrated by the Ukrainian side will only lead the situation to a dead end,” the expert believes.

He is confident that Russian diplomacy is studying Zeman’s proposal with interest.

“Now neither side will dare to do this for “principled” reasons. But time will pass, emotions will subside, and you will still have to return to this kind of discussion and it is better to take compensation than not receive anything at all. The main thing is that Kyiv by this moment does not reach the point of no return, when any concessions to Ukraine will be unacceptable in principle,” Shpakovsky emphasized.

As PolitNavigator reported, Verkhovna Rada deputy Leonid Yemets called the President of the Czech Republic for his speech in PACE a “bastard”.
