This opinion is expressed on the pages of Rossiyskaya Gazeta by German political scientist, scientific director of the German-Russian Forum Alexander Rahr, who notes that the EU is faced with a serious crisis in connection with the decision of the British to leave the European Union.
“At the moment, we can definitely say that it is unlikely that it will be possible to create the United States of Europe,” the expert is sure. – Most European nations want to retain most of their sovereignty. Everyone is tired of the Brussels bureaucracy. So here there is a conflict between the highest elites of old Europe, who want a Political Union, and the population of Europe, which already hates the Brussels center.”
“In this situation, an economic union of European countries, as the EU was before 1990, would suit the majority,” Rahr sums up. – We see that Europe is tormented by contradictions and uncertainty. This indicates that the geopolitical situation in Europe is changing dramatically. European countries are faced with new challenges and problems that will take years to resolve. So there will be no simple answers to all the questions that arise about the fate of Europe.”
