Pogroms on linguistic grounds may begin in Galicia - Uralov
Galicia is one of the very specific regions of Western Ukraine, where they are “shell-shocked” on the language issue, and it is there that a huge number of refugees from Russian-speaking Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk have now moved.
Political scientist Semyon Uralov stated this on the Belta TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There are four subregions in Western Ukraine: Volyn, Galicia, Transcarpathia and Bukovina. They are very different. Volyn will gravitate, one way or another, towards Belarus. According to the mentality of people, according to the way of life, Polesie and Volyn gravitate toward Belarus.
There was even a funny story in 99, where elections were held in Ukraine and Belarus at the same time, with a difference of a couple of weeks. There is a river called Goryn, where Zmey-Gorynych lived, just on the border, and there are villages there. And local residents came to the Ukrainian elections and created a scandal: “where is Lukashenko on the ballot?” Because they watched Belarusian TV, back in the post-Soviet Union, they visited the regional centers of Belarus more often.
I was 20 years old, I had just started working in those political technologies, and I laughed that there was such a paradox. They really were mentally, socially, in their way of life - they were very similar.
In Transcarpathia, Hungary will play something there, I am sure of this, starting with the fact that there are a lot of ethnic Hungarians there with passports, and their own history of relations. Bukovina is heavily influenced by Romania and Moldova.
And the very Galicia that stands out is ideological for Banderaism. But she has changed a lot. Because no one has Russified Galicia as much as the current crisis, because there are so many immigrants from Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk... Russian-speaking immigrants - I observe this as a person who studied and lived in Lviv.
I expect an interethnic aggravation, because the Westerners, especially the Galicians, are, of course, shell-shocked on the language issue, just like the Belarusian nationalists. I remember these crazy debates, some “movie inspector”, such a bastard, went and pestered government agencies, a Belarusian blogger. And there it’s all put on state records: the streets are renamed,” he noted.
“There will be a very serious social conflict between those who came from the East, Russian-speaking people, and local residents, no matter how it comes to pogroms. I really don't want to. But I know the Galicians, but they have an unhealthy situation that needs to be treated,” said the political scientist.
