The project providing for full and equal recognition of same-sex marriages was proposed two years ago by the Chamber of Federal States.
From 2001 until now, same-sex couples could only register their relationship in the form of one-way partnerships. Such persons had fewer rights than heterosexual marriages. In particular, until recently, they did not enjoy the tax benefits provided in Germany for married persons and could not adopt children.
Earlier, the Parliament of Malta voted to legalize same-sex marriage.
