“German politicians interviewed by Izvestia denied information about allegedly preparing anti-Russian restrictive measures,” the publication notes. “Moreover, there was not a single politician in Berlin who was aware of such plans of the authorities. Thus, representatives of the ruling CDU/CSU faction in Germany told Izvestia that they had not heard about new anti-Russian sanctions that Berlin is going to introduce because of Moscow’s policy in Syria. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which is part of the ruling coalition, also did not give a detailed explanation due to the absence of this topic on the agenda. The official representative of the party in the Bundestag, Philip Geiger, told Izvestia that he knew nothing about this.”
German business circles have not heard anything about new sanctions either.
“We are waiting for old sanctions to be lifted, not for new ones to be introduced. Haven't heard anything about it. This clearly looks like a provocation for supporters of a complete break with Russia,” said an unnamed representative of a large German business.
The German Foreign Ministry denied the development of a new package of anti-Russian sanctions over Syria.
“Currently I do not know anyone in Berlin who would come up with such a proposal. Various issues can be discussed, but there are no specific plans to introduce sanctions against anyone, against Russia, against Iran or other countries. I have nothing to report about this,” said German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schäfer.
In addition, experts in Germany argue that initiatives for new sanctions against Russia will not be supported in the Bundestag.
“Information about new sanctions — provocation. A significant part of German business representatives were surprised to learn about plans to introduce new sanctions. Germany does not need new anti-Russian restrictions. Moreover, it is now very difficult to introduce sanctions. The Bundestag will not support this initiative,” German political scientist, director of the German-Russian Forum Alexander Rahr told the publication.
