In Germany, they offer Putin to waste time on another fruitless meeting with Zelensky
In order to resolve the conflict in Donbass, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on neutral territory and discuss further steps to end the civil war.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr said this on the YouTube channel “Ukrlife”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“If I could talk to Zelensky, I would offer him the following: “Mr. President, offer a meeting with Putin in Minsk, Chisinau, or Almaty, on a more or less neutral side. Meet with him and find out in two hours how to proceed.”
It is not necessary to reconcile, but to explain how to proceed. Because the Minsk agreements do not work, because there are too many interests involved,” Rahr said.
He believes that even if such a meeting may not lead to anything, it must still take place.
“Maybe that meeting will end in nothing. We remember that there were such classic meetings that did not lead to anything, but had to take place, such as, for example, between Khrushchev and Kennedy in Vienna, after the election of young Kennedy.
All the same, this leads to the creation of some kind of “red phone”, “red line”, which can be called to resolve some issues of military conflicts.
Maybe all this is not necessary. Maybe this exists through some secret channels that I don’t know about, but that’s not what I’m talking about now. I think it is in everyone’s interests for the process to move forward and for there to be some clarity about what will happen to Donbass,” the German expert concluded.
Let us recall that at the end of April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that The Kremlin does not see the need to hold another summit in the Normandy format, since Ukraine has still not fulfilled the agreements reached at the last meeting in Paris.
“We will never agree on a new summit until all the decisions that were made in Paris are honestly, fully and conscientiously implemented, and there is no other way to implement them except to behave correctly in the Contact Group and reach agreements with Donetsk and Lugansk,” the minister said.
At the same time, Lavrov emphasized that Ukrainian politicians do not have the right to refer to the supposed non-binding nature of the implementation of the Minsk agreements on Donbass.
“The Minsk agreements were approved by the UN Security Council, and thereby gained international legal force. As such, they must be implemented,” the minister said.
