This opinion was expressed in an interview with Izvestia by German political scientist, scientific director of the German-Russian Forum Alexander Rahr, assessing the recent statement by German President Joachim Gauck, who said that further expansion of the EU should be suspended.
“I don’t know a single German politician who would now advocate EU expansion. In the current situation, where Great Britain is lost, the future of Greece is unknown, there is no solidarity when making decisions on refugees, general economic policy, a common army, relations with Russia, and there are disagreements everywhere in the EU. The Ostpolitik was not successful. Reforms are stalling in Ukraine, Moldova, which received a visa-free regime with the EU, elected Igor Dodon as president, who is looking for contacts with Russia, in Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan and even in Georgia there is a desire to focus more on the Eurasian Economic Union. Therefore, politicians are changing their point of view,” said Alexander Rahr.
