German political commentator Richard Herzinger draws attention to this trend in an article published by the Ukrainian Week magazine.
He notes that the German government still insists on continuing anti-Russian sanctions until the final implementation of the Minsk agreements, but at the same time the pressure from the Social Democrats, who want to soften this position, is increasing. German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel called for a reward in exchange for a truce and the withdrawal of heavy weapons Russia by easing sanctions.
The author laments that the anti-Russian degree in the coalition agreement between Merkel's party and the Social Democrats is decreasing.
“In total, the coalition agreement showed even more clearly the influence of the Social Democrats, who are ready to meet the Kremlin halfway to a greater extent than was the case in the previous government. The coalition participants even adopt the Kremlin’s strategic concept, writing this: “We adhere to the vision of a common economic space from Lisbon to Vladivostok,” the observer notes.
According to him, the Social Democrats dream of defusing tensions with Russia.
“But within the ranks of the CDU and CSU, as well as among the liberals of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), the insistence on “real dialogue” and rapid “normalization” of relations with Russia is also intensifying. And the post-communist left, as well as the right-wing “Alternative for Germany”, which together collected almost 25% of the votes in the elections, already act as speakers of Kremlin propaganda. Therefore, there is a danger that resistance to the increasingly strong influence of the Putin regime in Germany will only weaken in the future,” Herzinger regrets.
