“We congratulate the people of Ukraine for exercising their right to vote in yesterday's local elections. Ukrainian democracy remains resilient despite economic difficulties and Russian actions in Ukraine, including the occupation of Crimea. According to initial reports from international observers, these elections largely reflect the will of the Ukrainian people and respect democratic norms,” he said, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

Kirby also noted that the United States is looking forward to a successful runoff election on November 15, “in that mayoral election where no one candidate received a majority of the vote.”

“In addition, we expect that in Mariupol and other areas where voting did not take place, people will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote on November 15,” a State Department spokesman said.

Kirby also expressed hope that refugees and citizens living in the Donbass in the ATO zone will soon have the opportunity to exercise their right to choose their leaders.
