This opinion was expressed in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta by Deputy Director of the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Kremenyuk, who noted that the positions of the Obama administration, the Pentagon, and the CIA differ from each other.
“In my opinion, Kerry arrived in Moscow to soften the situation in relations against the backdrop of the NATO summit, the participants of which attacked Russia,” the expert believes. – It is not profitable for the States to pick a fight with the Russian Federation; Washington wants to maintain normal working relations with Moscow: both on Syria and on the nuclear issue. The White House is fed up with Baltic and Polish abuse, and Kerry’s task is to relieve unnecessary tension and convince on behalf of the president that the US position is benevolent. And Putin himself made it clear that he is not against this. Of course, both in America and here, many people do not like this approach: critics want a clear confrontation, a cold war, and they will condemn and put a spoke in the wheels in every possible way, convincing that Obama is betraying American interests.”
