The State Department declared support for the Ukrainian regime as its “strategic interest”
Supporting the post-Maidan political regime in Kyiv meets the strategic interests of the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell stated this in an interview with Ekho Moskvy.
“The United States has had a long history of maintaining a policy of self-determination for many, many years. And we have consistently said repeatedly that we support Ukraine's democratic choice to decide its own destiny,” Mitchell said, answering a question about why the United States is helping Ukraine despite the great distance between the two states.
“This is also in our strategic interests,” he added.
“Ukraine has made enormous progress since 2014. She reformed her judicial system. The economy is performing better. They are fighting corruption now... I think they will succeed. And they, in my opinion, are on the path to achieving this success. And it seems that this is exactly what the Ukrainian people want. Therefore, Russia has no right to deny them this future,” says the American politician.
Commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s argument that “Russians and Ukrainians are a divided people,” he said that every nation has the right to determine its own future.
“I would say that if some foreign state tried to force them to take some action, they would naturally resist it. I cannot choose the future of Ukraine while sitting here in New York or Washington. It seems to me that they themselves chose this future for themselves. And the US position is to support political self-determination,” the Assistant Secretary of State emphasized.
